A high-efficiency 500kHz step-down DC/DC integrated circuit with integrated FET delivers 3A of continuous output current and supports input voltages of 5.5 to 36V.

Texas Instruments has announced a high-efficiency, 500kHz, step-down DC/DC integrated circuit (IC) with integrated FET that delivers 3A of continuous output current and supports input voltages of 5.5 to 36V The small, simple-to-design switcher speeds time to market for point-of-load systems, such as industrial applications, digital television, DVD, battery charging and 12/24V distributed power systems

TI's nonsynchronous TPS5430 Swift convertor provides greater than 90% power efficiency and 2% output voltage accuracy (down to 1.23V).

Delivering 3A of continuous current (4A peak) at full temperature and operating over a junction temperature range from -40 to +125C, the device excels in hot environments where good thermal performance is needed, such as an LCD digital TV display that operates without the use of a cooling fan.

The TPS5430 is ideal for powering low-voltage DSPs, FPGAs and general purpose processors.

Additionally, for applications that require higher output voltage levels, such as high power LED or automotive systems, the TPS5430 can step-down voltages as high as 30V.

To reduce the size of external components, the device's switching frequency is preset to 500kHz.

In addition, all compensation components are integrated into the TPS5430 monolithic device, which minimises the total number of required external parts to seven components in a typical application.

In addition to the TPS5430, TI has also announced the TPS54317 synchronous, step-down DC/DC convertor with a high switching frequency, which can be synchronised up to 1.6MHz.

The highly efficient new switcher also supports 3A of continuous current (4A peak), while supporting an input voltage of 3 to 6V.

The TPS54317, which comes in a 4 x 5mm QFN package, reduces the size of external capacitors and inductors, while stepping down voltage as low as 0.9V.

Designers who use the TPS5430 and TPS54317 can take advantage of interactive software and other design resources.

The Swift Software Tool, available free via the TI website, includes a bill of materials, reference schematic, loop response graphs and an efficiency curve based on the designer's inputs.

Additionally, more than a dozen application notes and evaluation modules on TI's TPS54xxx family of Swift ICs guide designers through such topics as sequencing, adjusting the output compensation and designing with high-frequency applications.

The TPS5430 and TPS54317 Swift convertors are available in volume production from TI and its authorised distributors.

The TPS5430 comes in a highly reliable, thermally enhanced 8-pin HSOIC package, and is priced at $1.85 each in quantities of 1000 units.

The TPS54317 is available in a 4 x 5mm, 24-pin QFN package, and is priced at $2.50 each in quantities of 1000.

The TPS5430EVM-136 and TPS54317EVM-159 evaluation modules are available for $10 each.
