Reference design for wireless optical comms
A new technology from Texas Instruments dramatically cuts the cost and complexity of bringing the high-speed datarates of optical networking to end users.
TI's TPS40200 nonsynchronous PWM buck controller features an extremely wide input range of 4.5 to 52V with an output voltage that can be adjusted down to 0.7V.
The TPS40200 features voltage-mode control with voltage feed forward, which simplifies compensation design as input voltage varies over the entire input range.
Packaged in a low-pin 8L SOIC, the device supports control and protection features needed in today's power supplies, such as under voltage lockout, programmable closed loop soft start and short circuit protection.

Texas Instruments has unveiled two new triple-output plug-in power solutions for asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) applications.
Power system designers can optimise the TPS40200 for efficiency or solution size by programming the switching frequency from 35 to 500kHz or the controller can be synchronised via an external clock.
An integrated 200mA FET driver allows the direct drive of small- and medium-size power FETs.
The TPS40041 synchronous, voltage-mode PWM controller can operate from a 2.25 to 5.5V input source and generate output of 0.59V at a fixed frequency of 600kHz.
Further reducing pin-count, the buck controller integrates several features, such as soft-start and short-circuit protection.
The TPS40041 in a 3 x 3mm 8L SON package allows designers to implement very small point-of-load power supplies without sacrificing performance.
TI's TPS40222, a 1.25MHz nonsynchronous device with integrated high side FET comes in a tiny 3 x 3mm, 6-pin SON package and can operate from a 4.5 to 8V input source.
Additionally, the controller's output voltage can be adjusted as low as 0.8V.
Its high frequency operation allows for the smallest power supply form factor.
The TPS40222 implements current mode control and a pulse by pulse current limiting feature with frequency foldback to protect the output during fault conditions.
TI has also introduced its new TPS40190 cost-optimised synchronous buck controller with voltage-mode control and adaptive gate drive that operates from a 4.5 to 15V input voltage range at a fixed 300kHz switching frequency.
The simple-to-design device integrates a linear regulator, which converts the input voltage to an on-chip 5V source to power the controller and drivers.
In addition, the TPS40190 can generate an adjustable output voltage as low as 0.6V, making it ideally suited for cost-sensitive applications that convert from 5V bus, intermediate bus or 12V bus standards.
The controller also features three levels of on-chip overcurrent protection, internal soft start ramp and a dedicated enable pin.
The new TPS40K controllers are available in volume from TI and its authorised distributors.
Pricing per device in quantities of 1000 units begins at $0.55 each.
TI's easy-to-use TPS40K Designer Software, evaluation modules and application notes are also available.
