Mono graphics module for portable brightness

Hitachi has made a number of improvements to its range of mono and colour STN LCD graphics modules.

Hitachi has made a number of improvements to its range of mono and colour STN LCD graphics modules.

First up is the 5.5in 240 x 128 SP14N001 series.

These modules now have long-life CCFLs giving 150cd/m2 and up to 50kh useful life.

Competing modules using LED or EL backlights either use much more power, making them less suitable for battery-powered designs, or won't be bright enough in many conditions.

Further boosting the SP14N001's usefulness in handheld instrumentation is its working temperature range of -60 to +60C.

The module has the popular Toshiba T6963C controller onboard, giving a straightforward 8bit interface and a useful range of built-in character sets to simplify host system design.

Of particular interest to handheld instrument designers will be the matching touchscreen-equipped SP14N001-Z1A version.

This module has a four-wire resistive analogue touch sensor factory-bonded to the display.

(A touch sensor should only be attached in a clean room to avoid contamination, so this version removes a production stage for those intending to use this module with touch).

Both modules have viewing areas of 123 x 68mm and outer dimensions of 159 x 101 x 11mm (12.8mm for the touch version).
