Distribution for LEP displays

A Trident product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Apr 2, 2003

Cambridge Display Technology has appointed Trident Microsystems as a franchised distributor.

Cambridge Display Technology has appointed Trident Microsystems as a franchised distributor, allowing it to support UK customers with an exciting and innovative technology offering lower cost, brighter, lower power displays for sign boards and other applications where legibility and viewing angles are important.

Following the agreement, Trident will be promoting CDT's initial production product, a 5 x 7 matrix display with a single character of 35mm height.

In 2001, CDT opened a $25 million developmental manufacturing facility in Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire, where the initial production product is produced alongside specialised displays for military and commercial avionics.

CDT's business model is to licence the technology it has developed to display manufacturers, and the pilot production line helps prove the technology, and its processes.

Commenting on the agreement, Graham Grover, Managing Director of Trident Microsystems, said, "CDT's light emitting polymer (LEP) displays open the opportunity for cheaper, brighter, high quality colour displays necessary in this information rich age.

We will be seeking applications especially where large character size, wide viewing angles, brightness and daylight legibility are key.

An advantage of developing a relationship with CDT at this stage is that it gives Trident's team the opportunity to build early experience with this new and exciting technology".

Mike Urwin, Director of Manufacturing and Technology Transfer, Cambridge Display Technologies, added, "We are building an initial customer base for a very innovative technology that offers great benefits in many display applications.

Trident Microsystems offers us a team that has an excellent understanding of the displays market, and a close relationship with a large number of customers.

We believe that they will be very successful in finding an early-stage market for LEP technology".
