Displays specified for novel reading aid

A Trident product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Sep 23, 2003

Trident has signed a 10,000 units agreement with Tieman for the provision of displays for an award-winning portable electronic magnifier.

Trident has signed a 10,000 units agreement with Tieman, the world's largest specialist in equipment for the blind and partially sighted, for the provision of displays for an award-winning portable electronic magnifier, which is proving a hit with the visually impaired at schools, colleges and workplaces worldwide.

Based on a CCD camera linked to an electronic display, the Tieman Traveller electronic magnifier adds the ability to zoom continuously from 4.5x to 16x magnification, and to reverse hard-to-read white-on-black print, to the capabilities of a pocket magnifying glass.

"Designed for the visually impaired, this handy pocket unit makes short work of legal small print and maps", commented Trident Product Manager, Alan Perrin.

"The Traveller is a truly outstanding example of the imaginative application of display technology to the benefit of the handicapped".

Erik Bergman, buyer, Tieman Operations added: "Our key drivers in display selection were minimum size, minimum power and maximum legibility and image quality.

Trident Displays Benelux Office worked closely with us in selecting and implementing a display that met and exceeded our highest expectations.

Their support from the design phase through to volume production has been enormously impressive".

Based on a Hexa-Chain 16cm diagonal colour TFT screen, Tieman's Traveller design is a truly portable reading aid with a strong emphasis on ergonomics and functionality.

The Traveller features an adjustable viewing screen that can be angled for reader comfort, a full colour photo mode, and two high-contrast text modes for looking at photographs, print or handwriting.

The unit can be driven from the mains, or runs for at least two hours from a battery pack.

The Traveller's integrated, upright writing facility obviates the need for a separate writing stand, or the need to hold the camera unit above the page.

The Traveller is more compact and lightweight than alternatives, weighing only 800g, including the integrated batteries.

For more magnification Traveller has a socket for connection to a television.

Traveller won the Design for All award in the Dutch Design Awards 2003, and is participating in an International Tour of winning exhibits.
