The EtherMap-12 (TXC-04212) is the newest member of the industry-leading family of Ethernet-over-Sonet/SDH mappers from TranSwitch Corp.

The EtherMap-12 (TXC-04212) is the newest member of the industry-leading family of Ethernet-over-Sonet/SDH (EoS) mappers from TranSwitch Corp.

Designed to carry 10/100Mbit/s Ethernet traffic and Gigabit Ethernet traffic over Sonet at an aggregate bandwidth up to OC-12 rates, EtherMap-12 is the optimal choice for high capacity OC-12 or OC-48 access and metro edge transport networks.

Following the tradition of the highly acclaimed EtherMap-3, the EtherMap-12 provides efficient transport of Ethernet traffic over Sonet/SDH networks using low order virtual concatenation (VCAT), enabling the flexible assignment of bandwidth to individual Ethernet channels in increments of 1.5Mbit/s.

EtherMap-12's multiport/multirate EoS mapping can be used in a wide range of settings.

The mapper's versatility makes it ideal for applications in a variety of equipment deployed in the public network and enterprise located equipment.

Typical uses include add/drop and terminal multiplexers, optical edge devices (OEDs), multiservice access platforms, edge routers and IP DSLAMs.

EtherMap-12's efficient use of Sonet/SDH bandwidth combined with advanced capabilities such as link capacity adjustment scheme (LCAS) gives service providers the ability to better manage the utilization of their SONET infrastructure and greater flexibility in pricing transport services based on bandwidth.

Like the other members of the EtherMap family, EtherMap-12 incorporates multi-encapsulation capability.

Consequently, network equipment designed with EtherMap-12 can interoperate with any other network or terminal equipment that uses legacy link layer protocols such as PPP/BCP, HDLC and LAPF or newer protocols such as LAPS or GFP.

The EtherMap product family is designed to operate in an evolving multiservice network environment where new EoS services will be provisioned alongside legacy transport services such as T1/E1 or T3/E3.

Together with the Phast-12N framer and other TranSwitch mapping solutions such as TEMx28 and TL3M, EtherMap-12 supplies a complete set of building blocks for multiservice equipment developers.

EtherMap-12's Sonet/SDH interface is a parallel telecom bus operating at 77.76MHz supporting STM-4/STS-12/STS-12c rates.

Ethernet frames are mapped using low- or high-order Sonet/SDH containers and transported as selected during configuration.

An internal crossconnect combined with complete high- and low-order path processing enable the EtherMap-12 to provide robust carrier-class Sonet/SDH performance.

The device supports extensive flow control and buffering capabilities to enable oversubscribed provisioning of network bandwidth.

Sonet/SDH containers may be buffered externally to provide differential delay compensation.

On the Ethernet side, the mapper supports up to eight 10/100Mbit/s Ethernet ports using SMII or a single Gigabit (1000Mbit/s) Ethernet port using GMII.

Jumbo Ethernet frames are also supported.

Integrated MACs support full and half duplex modes and complete RMON statistics.

"EtherMap-12 delivers the level of integration, flexibility and carrier-class functionality that our customers demand", stated Rob Schwaber, TranSwitch Product Marketing Manager for the EtherMap and Phast lines.

"Using our EtherMap and Phast families of products, customers can now offer a full range of equipment solutions for the OC-3, OC-12, and OC-48 markets.

Our EoS solutions enable equipment companies to reduce their development costs and time-to-market and provide a compelling set of capabilities to their customers, the service providers".

EtherMap-12 is furnished with a comprehensive API-based device driver, BSDL file, evaluation kit, Ibis model, and extensive documentation.

The device is packaged in a 580-pin 27m x 27mm super flip chip BGA.

Pricing is under $300/unit in production quantities.

Samples will be available in 3Q 2003.
