Convertor provides simple output control up to 35V

A Torex Semiconductor product story

According to Torex Semiconductor, the new XC9106/07 series of step-up DC/DC convertors is ideal for powering LCDs and related mobile applications.

For designers of the latest generation of battery-powered mobile devices such as PDAs, MP3 players and cellular phones, reducing PCB real estate requirements and increasing power efficiency is essential for success in the market.

With this in mind, Torex Semiconductor, has introduced the new XC9106/07 series of step-up DC/DC convertors.

Providing simple external control of output voltages, stable output under all loads and ceramic capacitor compatibility, the new convertors are ideal for powering LCDs and related mobile applications.

The XC9106/07 series has been specifically designed to enable an external reference voltage, Vref, to be applied.

Output voltage can be set up to 35V using external resistors and Vref, providing easy external control of the output voltage.

Input voltage range for Vref is 0.8 to 2.5V.

For example, an output voltage of 25V can be easily configured with a Vref input of 2.5V and split external resistors of 270 and 30kohm.

Input voltage range for the new convertors is 0.9 to 10V.

Output remains stable regardless of the type of load capacitor used.

However, the new device's internal architecture allows low ESR ceramic capacitors to be used on the output, resulting in lower output ripple.

The XC9106/07 is also compatible with tantalum and electrolytic capacitors.

Oscillation frequencies of 300 or 100kHz are available.

Typical power efficiency is 85%.

The XC9106 offers PWM control of the output, while the XC9107 switches automatically from PWM to PFM mode during periods of light load operation.

This makes the latter highly efficient and particularly useful in applications employing light to heavy output current loads.

In stand-by mode supply current for all the new devices can be reduced to less than 1.0mA.

The XC9106/07 series is available in either SOT-25 or USP-6B packages, and has an operating temperature range of -40 to +85C.
