LED driver saves space for backlighting
Toshiba Electronics has launched an LED driver IC that will reduce battery power, lower component count and simplify the design of space-limited applications that use a white backlight.
Toshiba Electronics has launched a compact, high-efficiency LED driver IC that will reduce battery power, lower component count and simplify the design of cellular phones, PDAs, portable terminals and other space-limited applications that use a white backlight Supplied in a miniature, six-pin SOT23 package, the TB62731FU step-up DC/DC convertor delivers an output power of 320mW, allowing it to drive up to six white LEDs in series with a minimum of external components

Microcontroller meets needs of modern appliances
Toshiba Electronics Europe has launched a flash microcontroller specifically designed to meet the needs of modern home appliance applications including washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers.
An automatic driving current temperature derating function that allows full current to be delivered at room temperature further minimises component count by reducing the number of LEDs needed for a given brightness level.
Traditionally this has not been possible as designers have had to drive the LEDs with lower current levels to protect them against the effects of temperature increases.
Toshiba's new TB62731FU incorporates an internal switching N-channel mosfet with a typical on resistance of just 1.5ohm, contributing to an overall device efficiency of up to 90% (pulse mode) and 85% (DC drive mode).
Optimised for use with the white LEDs manufactured by the Nichia Corp, the TB62731FU step-up convertor operates from a supply voltage of between 3.0 and 5.5V and features a built-in shutdown function to minimise power consumption when the backlight is not required.
