RISC processor embeds more functions
A new 64bit RISC MPU offers high performance with space, power and cost savings in applications where Ethernet connectivity and high-speed, high-capacity data and program storage are required.
A new 64bit RISC microprocessor from Toshiba offers a combination of improved performance with space, power and cost savings in applications where Ethernet connectivity and high-speed, high-capacity data and program storage are required.
The TMPR4938XBG-300 integrates Toshiba's new TX49/H3 300MHz core with a 10/100Mbit/s Ethernet media access controller (EthernetMAC), a NAND Flash memory interface, and a variety of other on-chip peripherals.
This allows designers to reduce component count and cost by implementing single-chip solutions where, previously, a number of ICs would have been needed.
In addition to digital consumer applications, networking equipment, and other high-performance voice and data communications systems, built-in PCI control functionality means that the TMPR4938XBG-300 will also help to simplify the implementation of industrial control equipment and other PCI-based applications.
Toshiba's TX49/H3 core employs a 0.13um miniaturised CMOS process technology operating at speeds up to 300MHz.
This core provides optimised five-stage pipeline processing and a 64bit datapath and incorporates a memory management unit (MMU).
A hardware multiply accumulator (MAC) and a single/double-precision floating point unit (FPU) are also provided.
The core's instruction set supports MIPSI, II and III instructions, as well as MIPS IV prefetch, multiply/add and debug instructions.
The TMPR4938XBG-300 has 32Kbyte of instruction cache and 32Kbyte of data cache to ensure suitability for systems requiring high-speed processing.
A built-in accelerated SDRAM controller operates at 133MHz, and can support a variety of memory configurations including SRAM, ROM and NOR type Flash.
Enhanced peripheral functionality provides the flexibility for a wide variety of system configurations.
In addition to the EthernetMAC, NAND Flash interface and PCI controller, onboard peripherals include a four-channel DMA controller, a four-channel UART, three 32bit timer/counter channels, and an interrupt controller that can accept up to six internal inputs.
An AC-Link (AC97) interface is also provided.
Supplied in a 484-pin BGA package, the TMPR4938XBG-300 microprocessor has dimensions of just 35 x 35 x 2.3mm and operates with internal CPU and I/O voltages of 1.5 and 3.3V, respectively.
The device incorporates a debug support unit that supports enhanced JTAG, allowing complete boundary-scan access inside registers and integrated peripherals.
The TMPR4938XBG-300 currently supports MontaVista Linux and Wind River's VxWorks.
