SoC and software converge in set top box design

Toshiba and Convergence are developing a single-chip embedded DVB and multimedia home platform (MHP) solution for Convergence's parent company, set top box (STB) manufacturer Galaxis Technology.
The new MHP processor will be based around an MPEG-2 SoC developed by Toshiba for set top box and integrated digital television (iDTV) designs.
In the Galaxis STB application, this IC will run embedded, Linux-based MHP software created by Convergence using the company's modular software architecture.
Commenting on the agreement with Toshiba, Frank Fischer, Galaxis Technology's CTO, states: "MHP services are set to grow rapidly as digital content providers seek to deliver faster and ever-more comprehensive interactive services ranging from electronic programme guides to e-commerce.
This growth will fuel significant demand for MHP-enabled set top box solutions.
The integration of Toshiba's MPEG-2 hardware solution with the Linux-based MHP software from convergence allows us to rapidly design, prototype and manufacture set top box solutions that will address market requirements in terms of technology, performance, reliability and cost".
During the forthcoming IFA consumer electronics exhibition in Berlin (29th August to 3rd September) visitors to the Toshiba or Galaxis stands will have the opportunity to see live demonstrations of MHP functionality based on prototypes of the new MHP processor solution.
