A low-cost starter kit provides all the hardware and software required for rapid development and debugging of embedded systems for portable and battery-powered applications and other designs based on the latest 8bit Flash microcontroller from Toshiba The TOPASFM48 starter kit combines a hardware development board with debugging and development software, a Flash memory programmer, and extensive software libraries

As a result, it can significantly reduce development times and eliminate the need to purchase costly development environment tools.

In addition to the TMP86FM48 microcontroller itself, the development board features a variety of commonly used components and peripherals including an LCD display, LEDs and switches.

An unpopulated area allows the designer to mount some additional components.

The kit's PC-based software includes an integrated development environment (IDE), compiler and project manager tools, as well as a simulator, a debugger and, unusually for an 8bit solution, a powerful ROM monitor.

Using the ROM monitor, developers can rapidly identify potential bugs using a range of options that include setting break points and single-stepping through lines of code.

The starter kit is also supplied with a Flash programmer that simplifies the download of code onto the microcontroller, and extensive software libraries that include tutorials, example code, and application notes, as well as software IP samples for speech synthesis.

Launched earlier this year, the 64-pin TMP86FM48U/F is a high-speed, low-voltage 8bit microcontroller that features 32Kbyte of onboard Flash memory, of which 512byte is available for data storage.

This makes the device ideal for applications such as battery-powered, portable audio equipment, where the memory can be used to store volume and other status information at power shutdown.

The onboard Flash also provides the flexibility for post-production software programming to address low-volume, custom requirements.

The TMP86FM48U/F is based on Toshiba's proprietary high-performance 8bit TLCS-870/C CPU core operating at speeds up to 16MHz and voltages down to 1.8V.

Onboard peripherals include a two-channel 8bit timer/counter, a two-channel 16bit timer/counter, a programmable watchdog timer, and a 16-channel ADC.

Serial connectivity comprises a single-channel UART, a two-channel high-speed serial interface and a single-channel I2C interface.

Nine power-saving operating modes ensure minimum power consumption.
