Toshiba's latest 8bit microcontroller is a highly integrated 42-pin SDIP device that combines 16Kbyte of Flash memory with a comprehensive set of onboard general-purpose peripherals.

The 16Kbyte of NAND-type, in-circuit programmable Flash memory built into the new TMP86FH46N microcontroller delivers varying levels of functionality by simply changing onboard software.

As a result, the same microcontroller can be used to offer different performance levels across a range of products, or to cost-effectively address low-volume custom requirements.

Toshiba's TMP86FH46N operates across a wide input voltage range of 2.7 to 5.5V and is based on the company's proprietary, high-performance 8bit TLCS-870/C CPU core.

This core features 731 basic instructions and provides operation at speeds of up to 16MHz.

In addition to the onboard Flash, the TMP86FH46N also offers 512byte of RAM storage.

Peripherals built into the new TMP86FH46N include LED driver output pins, a 10bit ADC, a two-channel 8bit timer/counter, a two-channel 16bit timer/counter, and a programmable watchdog timer.

Serial connectivity comprises a single-channel UART and a high-speed 8bit serial interface.

The TMP86FH46N offers dual-clock operation and, in addition to the built-in stop mode, has eight further power down modes.

These comprise slow 1 and slow 2, idle 0, 1 and 2, and sleep 0, 1 and 2.

Slow modes minimise power consumption through the use of a low-frequency clock operating at 32.768kHz.

Idle and sleep modes shut down the CPU and operate the peripherals using either the high-or low-frequency clock depending on the mode chosen.

Toshiba is offering a starter kit to support the new Flash microcontroller.

This kit provides all of the hardware and software required for rapid development and debugging of embedded industrial and home appliance applications.

In addition to development and debug tools, the kit also includes a Flash memory programmer and extensive software libraries.
