Two new 12.1in colour SVGA LCD modules combine high luminance and wide viewing angles with built-in long-life backlights.

Toshiba has further expanded its family of active matrix thin film transistor (TFT) LCDs with two 12.1in (31cm) colour SVGA modules that combine high luminance and wide viewing angles with built-in, long-life backlights Developed by Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Company (TMD), the new displays present a space-efficient and low profile solution to display requirements across a variety of applications, including factory equipment, information and gaming kiosks, medical equipment, and electronic point of sale (EPOS) terminals

The new LTD121C30S and LTD121C31S colour displays offer a 800 x 600 (SVGA) pixel resolution and an active viewing area of 246.0 x 184.5mm in units with compact outline dimensions of just 278.3 x 209.0 x 11.0mm.

Twin cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) long-life backlights with mean time to failure (MTTF) ratings of approximately 50kh are built into the modules, providing long-term reliability and reduced lifetime maintenance costs.

Designed to provide high-quality display output across a wide range of ambient lighting conditions, the LTD121C30S and LTD121C31S have typical luminance ratings of 350 and 250cd/m2, respectively.

Typical contrast ratios for the LTD121C30S and LTD121C31S are 500:1 and 350:1, respectively.

Respective vertical and horizontal viewing angles are 120 and 140 degrees for the LTD121C30S, and 100 and 120 degrees in the case of the LTD121C31S, ensuring clear and sharp image quality in circumstances where the viewer is unable to directly face the screen.

Maximum turn-on and turn-off response times of just 50ms ensure that each unit delivers excellent image quality for moving video images.

Both of the new display modules will operate in ambient temperatures ranging from -10 to +65C, making them ideal for industrial applications and other extended temperature environments.

The nominal supply voltage for each unit is 3.3V, and typical power consumption rated at just 7.0W.

The new LCDs are mechanically compatible with the existing TMD LTM12C285 and LTM12C289 series of displays, allowing designers to improve the specifications of existing applications, in addition to adding high-quality, space-efficient display solutions to new designs.

The new displays also feature reverse-scan capabilities, which enable customer-selectable displays of either horizontal or vertical mirror renderings of the original image.

LCD displays typically feature wider viewing angles from straight on or above, compared to the viewing angles from below.

The reverse-scan feature allows customers to select either a normal scan or reverse scan to obtain the best-intended image, depending on whether the mounted display will be viewed typically from above or below.

Commenting on the launch of the new 12.1in modules, Marc Parsons, Business Development Manager for LCDs at Toshiba Electronics Europe, stated: "The combination of performance and small outline dimensions makes these new displays an effective and space-efficient alternative to conventional CRT-based systems across a wide range of industrial, terminal, kiosk and EPOS applications".
