Microcontroller takes more onboard

A Toshiba Electronics Europe product story

Toshiba's latest 8bit MCU is ideal for portable and other space-limited applications that demand minimum component count, flexible configuration and high-performance, low-power operation.

The latest addition to Toshiba Electronics Europe's family of 8bit microcontrollers is ideal for portable and other space-limited applications that demand minimum component count, flexible configuration and high-performance, low-power operation.

Toshiba's TMP86FM29 features 32Kbyte of onboard Flash memory.

An onboard LCD driver with built-in voltage booster reduces component count and board space by eliminating the need for external circuitry when driving displays.

Toshiba's TMP86FM29 is based on the company's proprietary, high-performance 8bit TLCS-870/C CPU core.

This core features 731 basic instructions and provides operation at speeds of up to 16MHz and voltages down to 1.8V.

In addition to the onboard Flash, the TMP86FM29 also offers 1.5Kbyte of RAM storage.

Designed to address the widest possible variety of applications, the TMP86FM29 incorporates a number of onboard peripherals.

These include a 10bit successive-approximation-type ADC, a four-channel, 8bit timer/counter, a single-channel, 18bit timer/counter, and a programmable watchdog timer.

The 8bit timer offers pulsewidth measurement and frequency measurement modes, and the 8bit timer provides PWM, programmable divider and PPG output modes.

Serial connectivity comprises single-channel UART/SIO, and 39 pins are available for I/Os.

As well as a built-in stop mode, the TMP86FM29 offers eight further power-down modes comprising slow 1 and slow 2, idle 0, 1 and 2, and sleep 0, 1 and 2.

Slow modes minimise power consumption through the use of a low-frequency clock operating at 32.768kHz.

Idle and sleep modes shut down the CPU and operate the peripherals using either the high-or low-frequency clock depending on the mode chosen.

The device can operate at dual-clock frequencies of 8MHz and 32.768kHz with a supply voltage of 1.8 to 3.6V.

Toshiba can supply the TMP86FM29 in either a P-LQFP64 package or a P-QFP64 package.

A starter kit is also available to speed the development and prototyping of embedded applications based on the new microcontroller.
