Toshiba Electronics Europe has announced the availability of a high-efficiency white LED driver IC for backlighting colour LCDs in mobile phones, PDAs, and other portable electronic devices.

The new TB62736FUG white LED driver IC uses Toshiba's proprietary technology to deliver a very high luminous efficiency of 87%.

As a result, it is ideal for maximising battery life in portable applications that use low power consumption, high-intensity white LEDs for LCD backlighting.

In addition, a guaranteed current accuracy of 15% (12% of RMS) significantly reduces the possibility of variations in LED brightness.

For the new IC, Toshiba has adopted a 0.65m, 30V BiCD process to integrate high drive current bipolar transistors, low current CMOS FET technology, and high-voltage, high current capacity DMOS (double diffused MOS) transistors.

The result is an ultra-compact component supplied in a SOT23-6 package with a height of just 2.9mm and a width of only 2.8mm (including lead length).

The BiCD process also gives the low power consumption demanded by compact mobile devices.

The TB62736FUG employs a pulse skip switching scheme, operates with a supply voltage from 2.8 to 5.5V, and has a typical output rating of 320mW (20mA/16V).

In addition to new applications, pin compatibility with drivers from other manufacturers provides for "drop-in" replacement in existing designs.
