New microcontrollers integrate the high-performance 8bit TLCS-870/C CPU core with 8Kbyte of Flash memory in a highly compact 28- and 30-pin package.

Toshiba Electronics Europe has announced new microcontrollers that integrate its high-performance 8bit TLCS-870/C CPU core with 8Kbyte of Flash memory in a highly compact 28- and 30-pin package.

The TMP86F807/808 devices are pin-compatible with mask-ROM equivalent (TMP86C807/808) and can therefore be used as a code development platform.

They are also well suited for end applications that may require late-stage design changes, or equipment that needs to be upgraded in the field, for instance to accommodate changing industry standards.

In addition to the core, Flash memory and 256bit on-chip RAM, the TMP86F807/808 integrate a variety of peripheral functions, reducing component count in space-critical applications.

These include serial communications via UART or SPI-compliant SEI (Serial Encoder Interface); a six-channel 8bit successive approximation A/D convertor; a single-channel 16bit timer/counter; a two-channel 8bit counter; and watchdog timer.

These new members of Toshiba's family of high-performance CMOS controllers are based on the company's high-performance TLCS-870/C CPU core.

The core offers 731 basic operations and operates at up to 16MHz with supply voltages of between 4.5 and 5.5V.

At a speed of 8MHz, the devices can be used with voltages down to 2.7V.

Low power consumption is ensured across a range of operating conditions by the provision of three idle modes, a slow mode, two sleep modes and a stop mode.

The TMP86F807/808 are equipped with a 2Kbyte EPROM containing a loader program that enables the Flash memory to be written via the on-chip UART.

This procedure, as well as RAM loader, checksum and product verification operations, is only possible after the user has forced the device into a special programming mode, under hardware control.

The TMP86F807/808 are available in 28-pin SOP or SDIP and 30-pin SSOP.
