Toshiba's TC9040x Donau series of processors are high-performance SoC devices are designed to simplify the design and reduce the component count of iDTVs, set-top boxes, and other consumer electronics products such as PVRs and combination hard disk/DVD recorder systems.
These devices combine the company's Media embedded Processor (MeP) architecture with a powerful 64bit embedded RISC host processor to create multimedia SoCs with compute performances of up to 650MIPS (at 180MHz).
The MeP architecture effectively frees the host processor from computing-intensive DVB and multimedia processing tasks and allows designers to choose cost-optimised solutions for DVB applications.
The Daewoo PVR uses the power of the Donau SoC to enable genuine dual-stream functionality for simultaneous decode and output of dual video streams.
The IC also provides three-stream audio processing to AAC, MPEG and AC-3 standards; audio post-processing including surround-sound and EQ functions; and a powerful multi-plane graphics engine with hardware accelerator.
Commenting on the choice of Toshiba's Donau technology, SG Lee, Daewoo's Director of New Technology Introduction, states: "By delivering all of the key functionality on a single chip, Toshiba's TC9040x processor has helped us minimise component count, design complexity and cost of the new dual-stream PVR platform".
Thomas Kuschel, Senior Manager of Toshiba's Microcomputer, Automotive and Consumer IC Marketing in Europe, adds: "High-speed, reliable dual stream video decoding is essential to the new breed of PVRs and other digital television applications demanding functionality such as picture-in-picture or simultaneous output to multiple devices".
"The Donau IC is an elegant, single-chip solution that provides all of the necessary processing functionality, allowing system designers to concentrate more time on the areas of their application that will deliver further competitive advantage".
