IC cuts automotive motor drives down to
size
Miniature automotive motor driver IC will save space, reduce component count and simplify the design of DC servo applications operating in LIN environments.
Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE) has launched a miniature automotive motor driver IC that will save space, reduce component count and simplify the design of DC servo applications operating in LIN (Local Interconnect Network) environments The TB9055FNG is ideal for air conditioning, headlamp levelling and other automotive motor control applications where functionality, size, component count, controller positioning and cost are all critical factors

First 7.7-inch low-temp polysilicon LCD for eBooks
Toshiba today announced commercialisation of a 7.7-in low-temperature polysilicon TFT LCD designed for mid-size electronic book devices incorporating Microsoft ClearType display technology
The TB9055FNG combines a low-ohmic H-bridge power stage, a servo circuit - including an analogue-to-digital sensor interface - protection circuitry, voltage regulator and a LIN transceiver.
Because of the 'hardwired' implementation of the LIN protocol, the device can be implemented as a fully functional LIN slave with the addition of just a small number of passive components.
During operation the IC receives data on the motor's target rotational position via the LIN bus, while the built-in servo circuit monitors the positional feedback signal from an external potentiometer.
The device then provides the output needed to adjust the motor position accordingly.
The IC is supplied in a miniature 16-pin SSOP, making it ideal for applications where space is limited.
This small size also means that the TB9055FNG and the additional passive components can easily fit within the motor connector.
In addition to conserving space, by allowing the entire servo loop to be placed close to the motor this approach also helps to improve reliability and regulation accuracy.
The new motor driver IC has a wide operating voltage range of 7 to 18V, and can handle peak currents in excess of 1A.
A low maximum standby current of 10uA minimises power consumption when the motor is not required.
Furthermore, because the IC is optimised to minimise host microcontroller overhead, a single micro can be used to control multiple motors.
The TB9055FNG will operate in temperatures of between -40 and +125C and has been developed to comply with TS16949, AECQ1xx and other global automotive standards.
Integrated protection prevents damage from short circuits (+/-1.5A typical), overtemperature and overvoltage conditions.
