Microcontroller meets needs of modern appliances
Toshiba Electronics Europe has launched a flash microcontroller specifically designed to meet the needs of modern home appliance applications including washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers.
The first customer for these drives will be the PC Division of Toshiba Japan.
To achieve performance levels of 100Mbyte/s read and 40Mbyte/s write in these first generation drives, Toshiba used a SATA II interface and an original MLC controller supporting fast read-write speed, parallel data transfer, and wear-leveling.
As a result, Toshiba SSDs achieve overall PC benchmark scores better than 5400 and 7200rev/min HDDs and comparable to selected SATA SLC NAND SSDs.
The SSD drives excel in Windows Vista boot speed, application loading, general usage and virus scan.
compared with hard disk drives, SSDs realise a number of advantages that address needs in the mobile computing market for performance, ruggedness, and lightweight, compact form factors.
Toshibas 64Gbyte MLC NAND SSD embedded module is also ready for mass production.
Additional models in 1.8 and 2.5in drive enclosures are scheduled to sample next month.
