LVD link for R and TTE certification

A TRL Compliance product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Nov 12, 2007

TRL Compliance is urging manufacturers to reference the Low Voltage Directive when self-declaring compliance for CE marking and for R and TTE Directive applications.

The Low Voltage Directive 73/23/EEC of February 1973 was recodified to Directive 2006/95/EC in December 2006.

The changes implemented are mainly minor text changes, although a new annex has been added that relates to internal production control (Annex IV of the directive).

It came into effect in January 2007 with no transition period.

"Companies are not infringing the law if they don't update their compliance documentation to reference the new directive", says Richard Mead, Safety Division Director at TRL Compliance.

"But customer perception is an important factor in driving the need for company's to be seen to be up-to-date with their technical documentation".

The much talked of technical review of the Low Voltage Directive, which has been in progress since 2000, has been postponed.

"The proposed changes received mixed responses from EU governments and industry", says Mead.

"In my personal opinion revisions are needed to improve clarity and understanding, so it would be a shame if they never see the light of day".

"We'll have to wait and see what happens when the revised LVD is revisited following the review of the New Approach system".
