Drives shrink to expanded demand
Toshiba is aiming to meet fast increasing demand for its 1.8in hard disk drives by doubling production to 600,000 units a month by March 2004.
Each application requires a completely unique set of specifications.
The ability to withstand extreme temperatures, low noise outputs, small form factor and ruggedness are just some of the qualifications.
"Toshiba SDD is formally announcing its move into these new sectors now, having become engaged in early customer assignments for the past two years", said Philip Walsh, European Sales Manager Project Business, Toshiba SDD Europe.
"We have consistently shown that our technology is second-to-none in its ability to meet the tough performance criteria of these applications.
Already several customer development projects have been successfully completed with Toshiba SDD working alongside the companies as their storage technology partner".
Toshiba SDD has a lengthy track record of delivering technical firsts in HDD and ODD development, including the world's first combination slim CD-RW drive with full DVD-ROM functionality for multimedia applications and the first 1.8in 20Gbyte drive for miniaturised mobile multimedia applications.
In addition to technology, the company delivers high levels of customer satisfaction and has the ability to meet customer requirements for product supply.
"The Project Business team will become a substantial amount of our European revenue.
This is our most significant new market initiative to date and we anticipate that it will grow to be as much as one third of all of our sales", said Walsh.
"This complements our existing activities in the PC-based market.
Toshiba SDD's success will be governed by the quality of our partnerships with customers and our early assignments are testimony to the results and competitive product differentiation that can be achieved.
"PJB's commitment is to provide engineering excellence as an enabling tool for other companies' imagination and creativity.
Toshiba SDD will partner with equally forward-looking companies to create the storage applications of tomorrow", he added.
