Drives shrink to expanded demand
Toshiba is aiming to meet fast increasing demand for its 1.8in hard disk drives by doubling production to 600,000 units a month by March 2004.
These designs will now be put forward to the competition's judging panel for selection of the winners.
The judging panel consists of senior executives from leading consumer brands including Bose, Archos, Flybook and Freecom, design expert Chantal Mourinos and freelance designer Rainer Bohl who has worked from both BMW and Ford.
The judging panel will meet in late February 2006 to consider each design and will judge each design on it's ability to meet key criteria including marketability, functionality, form/aesthetics and innovation in design.
One design from each competition stream will be selected as a winner based on how effectively it was able to meet the key design criteria.
Those designers who have made it through to the final will receive a golden ticket invitation to the web unveiling.
The two winning designers will also be given the opportunity to present their ideas in detail to the judging panel and have their product considered for manufacture by one of Toshiba's manufacturing partners.
"The level of quality, creativity and innovation in the designs is outstanding and the feedback from designers overwhelming", explained Martin Larsson, General Manager, Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division.
"We really feel that the designers have built on our vision for the 0.85in drive by demonstrating, through so many different applications, that the opportunities for incorporating HDD technology into our daily lives show no boundaries".
