Compact HDD raises storage density stakes
Toshiba has developed its first 2.5in hard disk drive to incorporate perpendicular magnetic recording and achieve the industry's largest capacity at 200Gbyte with only two platters.
Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division has announced its first 2.5in hard disk drive to incorporate perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) and achieve the industry's largest capacity at 200Gbyte with only two platters.
The new MK2035GSS drive delivers the highest areal density yet achieved in a commercial HDD of 277.1Mbit/mm2 .
The use of PMR technology has also enabled Toshiba to boost the data capacity to 1.67 times that of its previously highest capacity drive.
The drive's combination of serial ATA interface and 8Mbyte buffer memory also delivers enhanced performance for data intensive applications such as video streaming and recording, and the drive's industry-leading capacity has the capability to store approximately 800 hours of MPEG-4 formatted movie files.
As data consumption among consumers and business users continues to rise, particularly due to the advances in mobile audio and video applications, demand for greater storage capacities has increased exponentially.
The new drive is a slim 9.5mm in height and weighs in at only 98g, making it the ideal storage solution for notebook PCs.
"Be it at work or at home, we are creating substantial amounts of data each day and hard disk technology is the perfect technology to capture such increased data consumption", explained Martin Larsson, General Manager, Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division.
"The new 200Gbyte drive underlines Toshiba's leadership in 2.5in HDDs while delivering sizable increases in capacity to match users' thirst for high quality digital content".
