Two new industry-leading HDDs are optimised for mobile and multimedia applications.
Consumers are increasingly turning to high definition digital media and playback devices to enhance their audiovisual experience at home and at work.
Broadcasters are already replacing analogue technology with new digital equipment and sales of large, high definition screens are on the rise.
With more and more users having access to digital video, the demand for a platform for creating, editing and sharing high definition content has risen exponentially.
At only 12.7mm in height, the SD-L902A can be integrated into highly portable, next generation notebook PCs.
Because HD DVD discs have the same structure as standard DVDs, Toshiba has used an optical head with a single objective lens as those found in current generation DVD drives.
This results in a space saving solution that also offers backwards playback compatibility with the various DVD and CD formats.
"The HD DVD format offers numerous benefits for OEM manufacturers, media partners and end users alike and, as we enter the high definition era, is the most logical step forward", commented Martin Larsson, General Manager, Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division.
"For our OEM partners, HD DVD's similarity to current generation DVD drives overcomes the barriers faced when integrating new technology and our media partners are already bringing dual-layer discs to market".
"So, for the consumer, the offer of crisp, clear visuals, writable functionality and high capacity storage is an extremely attractive proposition".
