Automotive HDDs feature improved capacity to assist automobile manufacturers and aftermarket suppliers in designing robust digital devices for the car.

Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division (SDD) has launched two new feature rich hard disk drives (HDDs) for use in in-car applications These fifth-generation automotive HDDs feature improved capacity to assist automobile manufacturers and aftermarket suppliers in designing robust digital devices for the car including 3D GPS mapping, MP3 playback, digital video and gaming The new 40Gbyte HDDs support temperatures from -16 to +70C (MK4036GACE) and -30 to +85C (MK4036GAC)

Both drives can withstand 200g of operational shock and 800g of nonoperational shock providing a rugged and dependable option for cars and SUVs as they travel through extreme temperatures and terrains across the globe.

The new automotive HDDs deliver sufficient storage capacity for approximately 7500 songs or up to 130 hours of full-length movies.

Analyst firm IDC predict that the market for HDDs will grow from 2.4 million units in 2005 to 8.5 million in 2009, as automotive manufacturers, car dealers and aftermarket suppliers continuously introduce new digital devices that enhance the driver and passenger experience.

Toshiba was the first company to recognise the developing market for HDD storage in-car applications, and has worked with vehicle manufacturers and aftermarket suppliers for more than 10 years to develop and design automotive-grade HDDs.

The production of automotive HDDs requires years of investment in development and testing to ensure that the technology can withstand the rugged requirements of today's automobiles and to overcome any quality and performance issues that may hinder a HDDs ability to perform in certain environments.

With more than a decade's experience, Toshiba is widely regarded as the market leader and pioneer and, by the end of August 2006, will have shipped more than 4 million units to automotive and head-unit manufacturers for OEM and aftermarket products.

According to research firm TSR, Toshiba now supplies more than 85 per cent of the market.

Martin Larsson, General Manager, Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division said: "High capacity and shock resistant HDDs are a revolutionary car accessory and can convert cars into digital entertainment suits".

"We strive for our customers to experience the same level of quality in our auto-HDD as they would with any sophisticated home entertainment system".
