HDDs extend family of mobile hard drives and strengthen the company's capabilities to offer a range of high-performance high-capacity storage solutions to suit all market needs.

Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division has five new small-form-factor hard disk drives (HDDs) for consumer electronics and IT applications The new HDDs further extend Toshiba's market leading family of mobile hard drives and strengthen the company's capabilities to offer a range of high-performance high-capacity storage solutions to suit all market needs

The dual-platter 120Gbyte MK1214GAH is a high performance PC HDD and offers an aerial density of 295.1Mbit/mm2 - Toshiba's highest aerial density to date and its highest capacity for PC and IT applications.

The drive has been designed to offer compact, mini notebooks a substantial storage option.

The new drive can hold over 30,000 high quality MP3 files or just over 150 hours of DVD quality MPEG-4 video.

The 80Gbyte MK8025GAL is a single-platter HDD weighing only 45g.

It is ideal for portable media devices such as mp3 players and video players, where high portability is paramount.

This is a highly lucrative market which, according to research firm IDC, sales will jump to 286 million by 2010.

Toshiba was a pioneer within this industry and has, to date, sold about 60 million 1.8in drives for consumer applications.

The company is also releasing three separate HDDs which all deliver 60Gbyte capacity.

Each individual drive differs in specification to ensure their suitability for a variety of applications.

The MK6015GAA is most suitable for portable media players and spins at 3600rev/min to minimise noise emission and prevent compromising acoustic quality.

The MK6014GAL and MK6028GAL both offer aerial densities of 257.9 and 297.7Mbit/mm2, respectively.

The benefits of high performance and highly portable hard disk drives are prevalent across a diverse range of consumer electronics applications", explains Martin Larsson, General Manager, Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division.

"Success in this highly competitive market will be down to ensuring you have the right hard disk drive with the right specification for the specific individual's or application's needs".
