Acer CM and two other major customers have achieved full type approval (FTA) for GSM handsets with radios based on the HD15514XF (B4) direct conversion GSM transceiver IC.

Acer CM and two other major customers have achieved full type approval (FTA) for GSM handsets with radios based on the HD15514XF (B4) direct conversion GSM transceiver IC Using B4, Acer CM of Taiwan have passed FTA tests for their latest handset design; two further leading manufacturers, one based in Asia and one in Europe, have also recently passed FTA using B4

These approvals validate B4 operation with two industry standard basebands, and represent a significant step forward in radio architecture and integration.

The B4 chip uses direct conversion (DC) receiver technology which significantly reduces the external component count and total system cost.

The device also supports dual-band applications operating in the GSM900 and either DCS1800 or PCS1900 bands and is GPRS compliant up to class 12.

Chris Litchfield, Manager of Hitachi Europe's Mobile Business Segment said: "It is very satisfying to see yet another successful GSM RF transceiver IC result from the Hitachi/TTPCom partnership.

Hitachi's silicon technology and proven volume manufacturing capability together with TTPCom's GSM system expertise is, once again, proving to be an immensely powerful combination in the marketplace".

Julian Hildersley, Custom Solution Divisional Manager at TTPCom commented: "Our relationship with Hitachi has produced some outstanding products.

B4's Direct Conversion receiver and offset PLL transmitter provide an optimum solution for dual band GSM and GPRS handsets, and we have every confidence that B4 will become the platform of choice for the world's leading mobile phone manufacturers".

The B4 FTA is the result of close co-operation between TTPCom and Hitachi, who have a long standing and highly successful relationship which has produced four generations of industry leading transceiver solutions.

These include the popular HD15512XF ('B2') and HD15513XF ('B3') devices, both of which are used in tens of millions of handsets today.

B4 is a highly integrated single chip transceiver that incorporates on-chip LNAs, DC coupled programmable gain amplifiers, multistage filtering and a fully automatic DC offset correction system.

The receiver does not require high performance baseband A/D converters or specialised DSP algorithms.

A proven offset PLL transmitter minimises the transmit filtering and generates a low-noise output signal.

State machine operation via a standard three-wire bus is used to control all device functions.
