TTPCom has opened a sales and support office in the British Industry Centre, Yokohama, Japan.
This signals the company's increasing commitment to the Japanese market and to establishing itself as the partner of choice for Japanese telecommunications companies wishing to license dual-mode 3G/GSM technology with which to enter the European wireless market.
In expanding its presence in the region TTPCom is making it easier for Japanese communications companies to access its leading intellectual property (IP).
Commenting on the opening Tony Milbourn, Managing Director TTPCom said: "Whilst Japan is leading the world in the development of 3G technology, in order to expand into the European market, Japanese handset manufacturers will need to offer dual-mode 3G/GSM phones that can use the existing, widespread GSM/GPRS networks and at the same time take advantage of the high speed 3G networks as they are rolled out".
He added: "As an independent developer with over 13 years experience in wireless communications technology, TTPCom is very well positioned to license this dual-mode technology to Japanese manufacturers.
In addition we give them access to a range of advanced features - such as GPRS class 12, Bluetooth, wireless games - which can be key differentiators for new entrants to the European market".
Kiyohide Ikeda, Country Manager, TTPCom Japan, stated: "This is a very exciting time for TTPCom and this new office represents an excellent opportunity for us to strengthen our ties with our customers in Japan".
He continued, "TTPCom's GSM software has been used in over 60 commercial products and has been tested on over 70 networks worldwide - our Japanese customers recognise the strength and stability of our software and this is why we are their chosen partner for Europe.
When TTPCom began the development of 3G technology 2 years ago we recognised the importance of developing a dual-mode 3G/GSM platform from the start.
We now have a compact, well integrated solution that will enable our customers to develop competitive terminals".
TTPCom already has long-standing relationships in Japan.
The company has been working with Hitachi for over 8 years, and this work includes the development of one of the world's most successful families of radio chipsets - currently used in over 15% of the world's GSM phones.
In the 6 months April to September 2001, 29% of TTPCom's IP revenue came from Japan and the Asian region is of increasing importance to the company.
In 2001 the company established a sales and support office in Singapore which now comprises seven staff and has helped to spearhead the company's drive into the rapidly expanding China market.
The company envisages a similar growth in the Japanese office.
