ASMobile Communication has licensed TTPCom's Edge protocol software for the development of next generation, high-end multimedia handsets.
This deal builds on an ongoing collaboration between the companies and signifies the inclusion of TTPCom technology in ASMobile's entire 2005 product roadmap from entry-level GSM/GPRS phones to feature-rich fashion handsets.
Founded just one year ago in Taiwan as a wholly owned subsidiary of ASUSTeK Computer, ASMobile aims to deliver OEM/ODM services for the competitive European and South American markets.
The company currently has its first series of entry-level handsets in production, based on TTPCom's GPRS technology.
These are due to be shipped from January 2005 and will be closely followed by handsets with numerous multimedia features including downloadable games.
The first Edge capable handsets are expected to ship in Autumn 2005.
With datarates up to three times those available on GPRS networks, ASMobile's Edge handsets will be able to deploy data-intensive 3G type services including video downloads and high-speed Internet access across the growing number of Edge-capable networks worldwide'.
The new handsets will use chipsets supplied by Analog Devices and the combination of TTPCom's Edge software with Analog Devices' hardware is a proven technology platform that delivers a fast time to market.
Allan Cheng, Vice President of ASMobile comments: "Since the foundation of ASMobile, we have had a clear vision of the potential the market presents and the handsets we wanted to deliver to address its changing requirements".
"Collaborating with TTPCom gives us the backing of a long-term technology partner to support us through the development of our entire product roadmap".
"By basing our forthcoming Edge products on TTPCom's industry leading, proven technology, we knew that we could meet our aggressive release targets for new handsets and capture users' imaginations with exciting new capabilities".
"The fact that a new player in the handset market has based its entire range of handsets on our platforms is a real testament to the stability and ease of integration of our technology", adds Richard Walker, MD of TTPCom' Software Business Unit.
"There's a real opportunity for progressive newcomers to gain market share as the adoption of Edge gains momentum".
"We're delighted that, through the implementation of our technology, ASMobile will be perfectly placed to take advantage of its growing adoption".
TTPCom's Edge software has undergone extensive interoperability testing with leading infrastructure providers, test equipment vendors and wireless operators.
Results from testing have demonstrated that TTPCom's Edge platform can sustain industry leading datarates up to 216Kbit/s, enabling network operators and handset manufacturers to start rolling out 3G-style services, such as video streaming, on existing 2G networks.
