Tundra Semiconductor has been appointed to the Steering Committee of the RapidIO Trade Association.

Tundra Semiconductor has been appointed to the Steering Committee of the RapidIO Trade Association The Steering Committee acts as the governing board of directors for the industry standards association

The Steering Committee oversees the management of the RapidIO Trade Association and determines the technical and marketing direction of RapidIO Technology on behalf of the membership at large.

This committee is composed of leading system and semiconductor companies including, Alcatel, EMC, Ericsson, IBM, Lucent, Mercury Computers and Motorola.

"The Association welcomes Tundra as a member of the Steering Committee", said Sam Fuller, president of the RapidIO Trade Association.

"This appointment should be seen as a vote of confidence for Tundra and a reflection of the many contributions that Tundra has made to the RapidIO Trade Association and towards the development of RapidIO technology".

In the autumn of 1999, the RapidIO Trade Association was formed to address the need for a next-generation interconnect technology for the embedded networking and communications industry.

In February 2000, the Trade Association was founded as a not-for-profit open standards industry organisation by a group of seventeen industry leaders.

A select group of seven founding members formed the Steering Committee with the balance of the organisation made up of sponsoring and regular members.

Tundra is a founding member of the Trade Association and has been actively participating in both the technical specification development and has been leading the marketing working group chaired by Tom Cox, Director of Strategic Marketing at Tundra.

Rick O'Connor, Chief Technology Officer at Tundra, will be the Tundra Steering Committee representative.

"Tundra is a welcome addition to the Steering Committee", said Tom Collopy, PowerPC development program director, IBM Microelectronics and a director of the RTA Steering Committee.

"Tundra continues to bring its proven system interconnect expertise to the development of the specifications and marketing efforts of the Association.

Their appointment to the Steering Committee is a natural progression in their active participation to advance the RapidIO standard".

The RapidIO Parallel Specification was released in March of 2001 and the Serial Physical Layer addition to the standard was approved in November of 2001.

These two interconnect standards provide customers with solutions for a wide range of applications in the current and next-generation of embedded systems.

"Tundra has a long history of participation in standards development, working with groups such as, PCI SIG, PCIMG, RapidIO Trade Association, and VITA, to develop and enable interconnect standards", said Rick O'Connor, Chief Technology Officer of Tundra.

"Building on our leadership in standards development and our founding member status, our appointment to the Steering Committee marks the next step in our RapidIO System Interconnect product strategy and is in alignment with the needs of our customers".

Tundra continues to advance its RapidIO strategy.

The Tundra Tsi400, a high performance RapidIO-to-PCI-X bus bridge, and the Tsi500, a high performance RapidIO multiport bus switch, are set to begin shipping to partners and lead customers later in this calendar year.

RapidIO will play an important role in delivering the performance required in next-generation systems for both communications and storage companies.
