TI is working with Intellon Corp on residential gateway reference designs to accelerate delivery of data, voice and multimedia content throughout the home.

Texas Instruments is working with Intellon Corp, the leading provider of HomePlug powerline communications ICs for home networking, to jointly develop and market residential gateway (RG) reference designs to accelerate delivery of data, voice and multimedia content throughout the home The relationship is expected to result in comprehensive RG solutions that allow service providers to offer consumers high definition IPTV and triple play services over existing electrical wires

"TI is committed to delivering flexible RG solutions that give service providers multiple options for delivering the latest video, voice and data services to and through the home", said Kurt Eckles, director of marketing and customer support for TI's Residential Gateway and Embedded Systems business unit.

"By combining Intellon's HomePlug AV-based powerline communications ICs with TI UR8 platforms for the residential gateway market, together we are poised to expand home connectivity options and fuel growth opportunities for service providers well into the future".

The joint reference designs will be based on TI's UR8 architecture that offers the flexibility for connectivity over all ADSL and VDSL2 standards.

Based on an advanced multimedia gateway processor, the UR8 platform is designed to support multiple home networking options and variations of feature functionality, including enhanced voice capabilities and advanced video services.

TI announced availability of five new xDSL solutions from its UR8 family earlier this month.

Intellon's INT6000 powerline IC will be included in the joint reference designs.

Based on global standard 200Mbit/s HomePlug AV specification, the IC enables multiple high-definition video streams to be distributed over existing home powerlines, coaxial cable or other wiring with whole-house coverage, low latency, and robust Quality of Service (QoS) demanded by emerging in-home video and audio applications.

"By leveraging our mutual strengths, the joint Intellon-TI offerings will help service providers capitalise on the continued growth of the home networking market", said Andreas Melder, senior vice president of strategic business development at Intellon.

"Consumers are looking for enhanced capabilities without the complication or cost of additional wires, and we are pleased to be working with TI to address home communications and connectivity requirements".

The two companies expect to offer their first reference designs during the first quarter of 2007.
