Product category: PCB Connectors
News Release from: Tyco Electronics UK | Subject: SpeedPac I/O connector
Edited by the Electronicstalk Editorial Team on 12 October 2001

I/O connector runs up to 5Gbit/s

Specifically designed for Infiniband applications, the SpeedPac I/O connector enables the processor to operate at optimum speed and thus removes the historical bottleneck of the PCIbus I/O bandwidth.

Specifically designed for Infiniband applications, the SpeedPac I/O connector enables the processor to operate at optimum speed and thus removes the historical bottleneck of the PCIbus I/O bandwidth limitations It is foremost a high performance interconnect capable of operating up to 5Gbit/s with negligible crosstalk and minimal insertion loss

SpeedPac's design includes a high-speed section with up to 24 differential pairs (5.0Gbit/s) with a low speed and power section with 18 contacts with a current rating of 2.5A.

The high-speed section of the module is designed to enclose each high-speed differential pair with an air dielectric and a metallised housing to ensure a precisely balanced differential impedance of 100ohm +/-5%.

Two other important features are a low insertion force design and an improved card edge interface.

Further, inserting the mating daughter card or I/O module will create a caming action that lowers the high-speed section after the power and ground contacts mate.

Backed by seven of the computing industry's leaders, Compaq, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems, InfiniBand is an emerging standard that sets out to provide a new server architecture that delivers a channel based, switched fabric technology.

The InfiniBand Architecture decouples the I/O subsystem from memory by using channel based point to point connections rather than a shared bus, load and store configuration.

The new architecture is based on a 2.5Gbit/s wire speed connection with one, four or twelve wire link widths, which offers scalable performance through multilink connections as well as a host of interoperable link speeds. Request a free brochure from Tyco Electronics UK ...

The specification supports both copper and fibre implementations.
