Insulated flat copper cable distributes the power

Providing the designer with a cost-effective solution to power distribution, the Ampower Wave Crimp system from Tyco Electronics is based on insulated flat copper cable in strip form and a novel termination technique.
The termination technique is based on fingers that clamp two flat copper cable strips together, providing a shearing mechanism that causes the two copper strips to cut into each other to produce a reliable connection with known performance parameters.
The Ampower Wave Crimp systems' special termination requires no stripping, does not reduce cable cross section and provides a reliable, low-resistance, gas tight interface.
Key advantages of the Ampower Wave Crimp system include light weight with respect to other solutions, easy addition of plug and socket connectors and as the cable is flat; much less space is used up.
These features make it especially suitable for applications such as avionics, space satellites, radar as well as military and computer servers.
Further benefits include low profile, packaging flexibility, reduced noise and improved heat dissipation.
A wide variety of interconnection options are available including standard terminal blocks, stud tabs, self aligning connectors and wire- to-wire/wire-to-board separable connectors.
Ampower Wave Crimp system flat cable can be interfaced directly to round wire via 0.250in Faston Tabs adding further versatility.
Side and mid-cable taps permit both bussing and joining of two cables allowing for higher current carrying requirements for multicable systems.
System modularity issues are dealt with via blind mate drawer connectors as well as separable interfaces and taps, which service multiple distribution points on either backplanes or daughter cards.
Custom assemblies using the Ampower Wave Crimp system are also available from Tyco Electronics.
The assemblies are specified to carry 70 to 110A (with a 30C temperature rise), depending on the mounting interface.
Further, Wave Crimp meets a variety of specifications including environmental test to Military Standard 202, Loral E038027 corrosion and electrical, vacuum stability, and simulated satellite shock/stress, among others.
