A new switching coax connector responds to mobile industry trends that demand size reduction, performance improvements and price competitiveness.

Tyco Electronics has developed a new type of moulded interconnect device (MID) switching coax connector to respond to the latest mobile phone industry trends that demand size reduction, performance improvements and price competitiveness.

The connector features a size of only 3 x 3 x 2.5mm, saving space on the PCB, and the design guaranteeing superior electrical performance.

The new device is mainly used for setting up the phone during production by using a coaxial test adapter which opens the switch and closes the coaxial shielding by just pressing on the MID connector.

To meet the requested high standards for mechanical and electrical performance, Tyco Electronics uses a specific production method called MID.

This technology allows manufacturing of electrical circuitry by selectively plating plastic moulded parts.

The biggest advantages of this method are the repeatability of the process and coplanarity efficiency.

The resulting connectors can withstand up to 30,000 working cycles.

Tyco Electronics is one of the biggest suppliers for switching coax connectors for mobile phones used for testing and for car kit applications.

The switching function transmits the signal from the internal phone antenna to an external car antenna.

This delivers better signal transmission quality and safe phone usage without RF radiations inside the car.
