Fibre system takes on critical
interconnects

A comprehensive family of fibre-optic products based on expanded beam interconnects is available for high-performance applications such as aerospace.

A comprehensive family of fibre-optic products based on expanded beam interconnects is available for high-performance applications such as aerospace, mission-critical signals in aircraft and in-flight entertainment systems The connectors and inserts are also ideally suitable for use in a variety of harsh environments, including military and civil field-deployable communications, oil and gas, marine ship to shore applications, and mobile diagnostic systems

Expanded beam technology works by physically expanding and collimating transmission signals into a much wider optical beam.

For multimode signals the beam is over 14 times its original diameter and presents a cross sectional area that increases over 200 times.

For single-mode signals, the collimated beam is over 45 times its original diameter with over 2000 times cross-sectional area.

In both cases, the collimated beam is then refocused back down onto the core of the receiving fibre.

A common insert houses one- to four-channel expanded beam contacts and fits into a modular ARINC 600 and 404 connector systems.

Key features of the expanded beam contact include: a no-wear noncontact method of mating optical fibres; very high resistance to vibration; low sensitivity to thermal fluctuations; easy handling and cleaning; as well as a durable connection that is highly immune to dirt and contamination.

The connectors also offer a rugged hermaphroditic construction, low transmission loss, and three different insert sizes, including a mini-expanded beam insert, claimed to be the smallest in the industry. Request a free brochure from Tyco Electronics UK ...
