Relay protects automotive batteries

A large specialised relay, the BDS-A battery disconnect switch from Tyco Electronics is an electrical on and off latching relay specially designed for 42V levels.

A large specialised relay, the BDS-A battery disconnect switch from Tyco Electronics is an electrical on and off latching relay specially designed for 42V levels It has a wide range of applications in the automotive market, principally the disconnection of starter, generator, fuel pump and various loads in case of crash to prevent fire, battery explosion and discharging of the battery

Other uses are to disconnect the battery in case of short circuit, overcurrent, wrong polarity, jump-start or to provide galvanic separation of dual voltage systems, as an energy management switch, and for seasonal, service and transport deactivation.

Electrically resettable, the battery disconnect switch is designed to operate over -40 to +120C and withstand shock up to 40g.

Maximum continuous current at 85C is 150A at 42V.

Carrying starter current for 250A, and carrying peak current for one second is 400A at 42V.

The BDS-A battery disconnect switch facilitates short-circuit protection up to 1000A The BDS-A builds on the success of the BDS-S, a 14V range manually resettable battery disconnect switch used to disconnect the car battery in the event of an accident.

An additional, electrically resettable 14V device for dual battery power net, high current, battery disconnect and energy management applications is currently being designed in a latching and monostable version, capable of carrying 200A steady state and switching up to 2000A.
