A new backplane processor, offering high-speed automatic pick, inspect and place for large PCBs, has been developed by Tyco Electronics.

Designed to increase production efficiency, the PC-controlled device delivers significantly reduced process times, provides extremely accurate machine vision PCB position location, and offers ultra-quick inspection for instant detection of bent and missing pins.

Containing high-speed linear servomotors for rapid performance, Tyco Electronics' Mako operates at a speed of 120in/s to deliver placement times of 3-5s per connector - eg three seconds for short tail connectors with a low number of pins, and five seconds for fine pitch connectors with up to 1000 pins and long tails.

Fixtureless, with automatic tool changer and a ten position tool rack, the Mako provides increased levels of efficiency coupled with a high degree of functionality and user-friendliness.

The system incorporates flexible feeder bays with 40 locations on 50mm (2in) centres, and servo head rotation to enable connector insertion at any angle.

Incorporating an advanced insertion force monitor to verify pre-seating, the Mako provides real time SPC on pin quality, together with CPK, X-bar and R-charts.

SMT inline operation is available through its SMEMA-compatible interface, while every component is 100% traceable with PCB tracking by serial number.

Compatible with Tyco's AEP-12T large PCB electric servo press, the product has a standard PCB capacity of 900 x 1200mm - with optional 900 x 1525mm configuration - provides feeder carts for offline configuration and is fully CE certified.

The first Mako will be installed in the UK at a leading contract electronics manufacturer within the next 2-3 months.
