Board-to-board connector boosts signal density

The Type A/B connector offers the guidance ability similar to the Type A connector, but also uses the centre three columns for additional signal pin capability.

Tyco Electronics has added a Type A/B variant to its Z-Pack 2mm HM (hard metric) connector system.

The connector is a two piece board-to-board interface with a daughtercard to backplane connection.

The Type A/B connector offers the guidance ability similar to the Type A connector, but also uses the centre three columns for additional signal pin capability as located in the Type B connector.

With the addition of the three-column signal pins within the connector, the Type A/B connector is essentially a combination of the two standard products designed for higher density.

The A/B connectors are available in a five-row configuration with 95, 110 and 125 signal pins.

The male connectors mate with Type A/B right-angle female connectors and are end stackable without change in the contact pitch.

The Type A connector has 110 signal pins with centre guiding and keying facility.

The Type B connector has 125 signal pins, but does not include the centre guiding and keying facility.

As electronic developments are increasing the demands on system performance, connectors can no longer be considered as discrete components, but as part of a total electrical design.

Tyco Electronics' Z-Pack 2mm HM connector system is used in high-end stations, graphic work stations, servers, super computers, wireless interfaces, high-end network systems, high-end CPU testing, telecomms hubs, and military "dark" programmes.

In addition to standard applications, Tyco Electronics offers 5-row, 5+2 row, 8-row, 8+2 row, 12-row, short tail length, and feed-through versions.

The 5+2 row version is used with females with ground return shields and contacts in rows z and f in addition to those in the 5-row version.

Also, polyester film tail guides can be fitted to feed through posts to aid assembly to the board.

Materials include glass filled polyester grey housing with a UL94V0 rating.

The Z-Pack 2mm HM interconnection system complies with the requirements of IEC917 and IEC61076-4-101.

Tyco Electronics 2mm HM connectors are intermateable and interchangeable with other industry standard versions that meet IEC specifications.
