Motorola is to use u-blox technology in life-saving vehicle tracking systems deployed by the New York and Chicago fire departments.

Motorola will incorporate the u-blox Antaris GPS receiver in its MDR800 model F5127 vehicle tracking system.

The receiver has integrated dead-reckoning functionality that, with the help of additional sensors, provides accurate vehicle location information, even in tunnels and underground parking garages.

"One of the things the FDNY learned during the crisis of 9/11 is the importance of co-ordinating emergency vehicles without delay", says Asa Yanai, Motorola's Project Manager.

"With the implementation of the MDR900 with u-blox technology, response time to 911 calls has been shortened by 3 minutes according to New York City officials".

"u-blox is proud to partner with Motorola in helping make New York City a safer place", adds Nikolaos Papadopoulos, President of u-blox America.

"With the help of u-blox positioning technology, Motorola has given the FDNY the necessary means to respond timely and accurately in future emergencies".

Other municipalities are planning to introduce the MDR800 too, as are several rental car agencies and major delivery companies.
