To celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, China's flagship information technology publication, China Electronic News, jointly organised an awards event to identify "The most influential enterprises in China's information technology in 20 years".
On 15th December 2004, Universal Instruments was named one of the top 40 businesses at a prestigious ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Information Industry - People's Republic of China.
Based on voting by the readers of China Electronic News and visitors to www.sina.com.cn, China's most popular web portal, Universal Instruments was chosen for its "superlative performance" in the China region over the past 20 years.
The judging criteria decreed that an enterprise must be top ranking in China's information industry or in its sector; that it must be outstanding in its innovations in the areas of technology, market, administration and services; and that it must be a brand of high awareness and reputation.
A panel of specialists and market experts adjudicated the voting to determine the winners.
Besides Universal Instruments, other companies honoured included top Chinese enterprises such as Sichuan ChangHong, Skyworth, Haier, Hisense, Huawei Technology, Lenovo, and multinationals like Alcatel, Cisco, Epson, Ericsson, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Philips, Sony, Samsung and Toshiba.
The awards ceremony saw 400 influential technology leaders gather at a 5-star Beijing hotel for a prestigious event that included a networking opening ceremony, formal dinner, speeches, Chinese dancers and musicians, and finally the awards announcements.
Gene Heiser, VP Sales and Marketing at Universal Instruments, was invited on stage to accept a plaque on the company's behalf.
"We were pleased to be nominated and delighted to be among the winners".
"Now we will proudly display this award in our Shekou facility's Hall of Fame", says Heiser.
"It is very rewarding to gain such recognition for our continuing efforts and commitment to the technology industry in China".
"We know we're on the right track and intend to stay the course", Heiser adds.
The award is also a fitting climax to Universal's own 85th anniversary celebrations.
A special event supplement published by China Electronic News on 14th December included congratulatory messages from Chinese Government leaders and interviews with representatives from each of the 40 most influential enterprises accredited.
In addition, sina.com.cn is to post interviews with chief executives of the 40 winners during December 2004.
