Simon Jones is currently Professor of Electronic Systems Design and Head of Group at Loughborough University, and holds the ARM/Royal Academy of Engineering research chair in embedded systems.
He has more than 90 research publications to his credit and has a major research interest in digital signal processing using advanced microelectronics technology.
He is chair of the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers for the UK and Republic of Ireland, and a board member of the Defence Scientific Advisory Committee.
Simon Jones was born in Llanelli, South Wales and went to Llanelli Boys Grammar School.
He gained a BSc in computer science, MSc and PhD degrees in microelectronics from Brunel University, and has a graduate diploma in German language.
His career includes a spell as lecturer at University of Wales Bangor, senior lecturer at the University of Nottingham and, since 1992, Professor at Loughborough.
Prof Jones will take up his appointment as Dean of Engineering and Design on 1st October 2002.
