The Institution of Electrical Engineers has awarded top marks to the undergraduate degree programmes within the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Bath.

The Institution of Electrical Engineers has awarded top marks to the undergraduate degree programmes within the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Bath.

The institution carries out a detailed five-yearly teaching quality audit of electronic and electrical engineering programmes at the university, rating them in marks out of four in eight different categories covering a wide spectrum of aspects of the programmes.

In its latest review it awarded the Bachelor of Engineering and the Master of Engineering degrees at the University of Bath the maximum four marks out of four in each of these eight categories.

Prof Peter Watson, Head of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Bath, said: "This is an excellent outcome, reflecting the sustained effort of our staff over the last four years to enable the department to provide a teaching and learning environment for Electronic and Electrical Engineering that is second to none in the UK".

"Not only did our mainstream electronic, electrical and communications programmes achieve full five-year accreditation with the highest possible assessments in all areas of activity, but our new degree programmes in communications engineering with psychology and electronics with space science and psychology also achieved the highest possible quality ratings and so also have IEE accreditation".

The IEE teaching quality audit examines a wide range of aspects of degree programmes, including the nature of projects carried out by students, the key skills they develop, the employment of graduates on completion of their degrees, staffing, resources and facilities, and quality assurance.

All four mainstream degree programmes offered by the University's Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering have full IEE accreditation.

These are electrical and electronic engineering, electronics and communication engineering, computers, electronics and communications, and electrical engineering and applied electronics.

The two latest additions to the departments degree programmes - communications engineering with psychology and the degree in electronics with space science and technology - have also been accredited for the five-year period.

The programme in electronics with space science and technology is completely new, being taught for the first time in the coming academic year.

Each of the six programmes are available as three-year Bachelor of Engineering degrees or as four-year Master of Engineering degrees.
