Slimline Li-polymer cell is top German innovation

Varta Microbattery has received a prestigious award recognising its innovative PoLiFlex rechargeable battery.

Dr Dejan Ilic, CEO of Varta Microbattery has revealed that Varta Microbattery has been chosen to be the recipient of the 2006 "The World's First Innovation Award".

This prestigious award is recognised worldwide and celebrates the achievements of a select list of top tier German industrial and business organisations.

The Innovation Award is organised every year by Germany's biggest weekly magazine: "WirtschaftsWoche" and the Wirtschaftsclub R-M.

The 2006 Award was presented to Dr Ilic by Michael Glos, the German Federal Minister of Economics and Technology.

This year's nominees were judged by an elite list of top German industry leaders, who chose the winners according to the following criteria: innovation and management; market success; profitability and positive impact on the environment and society.

Guests from industry, science and politics were invited to attend the gala where the focus of the Varta award was on the company's innovative PoLiFlex rechargeable battery.

Varta PoLiFlex is an extremely thin (the smallest measures 0.05mm thick) lithium polymer rechargeable battery, developed featuring the use of polymer plastics.

The product is further distinguished by its high energy density, extremely long life as well as its flexibility.

This innovative battery is ideal for the newest, smallest mobile devices and can be recharged more than 1000 times.

On receiving the Award, Dr Ilic remarked: "In today's business environment it is not common that one enjoys the opportunity to fully develop a marketable product which begins only as an idea in your head".

"From the idea phase, this concept continued to the laboratory; then we defined the necessary processes and technological steps and finally configured the manufacturing lines".

"When this process was completed it was a great pleasure for me to offer a unique, market-ready product that had begun as a mere vision".

"Through determination and concentrated effort we have made a vision come true and created both a revolutionary product and the most state-of-the-art production facility for this unique polymer battery".

Varta PoLiFlex power cells feature proprietary "nano materials" and are designed for use in a wide variety of today's state-of-the-art portable devices - including the new MP3 players.
