LCDs can now be produced in polygonal or even circular shapes, following investment in new precision glass scribing technology.

LCDs in polygonal or even circular shapes are available from industrial and automotive specialist Varitronix following investment in new precision glass scribing technology.

Glass can now be cut up to 500mm square, generating polygons, circles or other more complex shapes including arcs.

Robert Hill, Engineering Manager of Varitronix UK, comments: "We've always been able to provide customers with square or rectangular shape displays to their requirements - now we're no longer constrained by that, and can provide a more tailored LCD solution in nearly any shape possible".

"We're expecting a lot of interest".

Minimum order quantities for free shape displays are similar to those for other custom LCD orders.

The Free Shape options applies across Varitronix extensive portfolio of mono LCD technologies.

In addition to high performance, cost-effective standard STN technology, Varitronix offers DSTN for automotive and other applications requiring enhanced readability and wider temperature ranges.

Other options include extra-thin ISTN technology, double-active STN allowing the display of two images in the same place, and IBN, a technology offering exceptional contrast of up to 500:1.
