Software brings virtual prototyping to peripherals

Today's high-end automobiles have up to 70 ECUs connected by an average of five buses under the control of millions of lines of software interacting in real time.
As BMW reported at the January 2004 Automotive Electronics Conference in San Diego, California, 50-70% of the development cost of an ECU is related to software and already 40% of a vehicle's cost is determined by electronics and software.
These industry trends are driven by competitive forces that mandate improvements in vehicle drivability, emissions, fuel economy, safety, quality and infotainment systems - all made economically feasible by the enormous computational power of embedded systems.
