Are we WEEE-ready?
The much-discussed and much-delayed Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations will soon come into force in the UK, says James Skidmore.
WEEE producer compliance scheme is approved
Valpak has been approved as a WEEE producer compliance scheme, and will be able to offer a full range of services for both B2C and B2B customers.
The new directive will see producers of electrical and electronic goods for the business-to-business market face strict new compliance rules for dismantling and recovery of equipment across ten broad categories, including IT and telecomms, electrical tools and instrumentation products.
Valpak already operates a WEEE precompliance scheme that offers members key information and advice regarding the WEEE Directive, including a timetable of events and an overview of the various options for producers and retailers.
Valpak is a major stakeholder in shaping policy for the WEEE Directive and is working closely with the Department of Trade and Industry to ensure its members' views are heard.
Michael Sadler, Head of Valpak's precompliance service, said: "Teaming up with Environ gives our precompliance members the chance to tap into its expertise and provides even more added value to their membership".
"It also gives members a head start in understanding the issues they need to be thinking about now to ensure the cost of compliance is kept to a minimum".
Environ's Dr Aidan Turnbull, said: "Minimising the costs of compliance with this directive means producers need to start taking action now".
"This means understanding why and how customers currently discard products and assessing the costs and benefits of different options for collection and recycling".
"Our experts will show companies how applying eco-design principles can produce products which are easier to dismantle, recycle and recover, thereby reducing costs".
Industry data show that around 60% of UK electronic and electrical equipment manufacturers and producers supply the B2B market and will be affected by the new regulations.
