Leading producer responsibility scheme Valpak has welcomed last week's announcement from the Department of Trade and Industry concerning the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive.

Michael Sadler, Head of WEEE Compliance at leading producer responsibility scheme Valpak, has welcomed last week's announcement from the Department of Trade and Industry concerning the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive He commented: "The DTI's announcement is to be welcomed as it gives industry greater clarity about some of the key issues prior to the implementation of WEEE legislation in the UK"

"One of the greatest concerns on the implementation of the directive has been the timeline, which was widely acknowledged to be unworkable".

"The new schedule announced by the DTI, which will transpose the directive into UK law in summer 2005, gives us an extension which will allow industry to plan more effectively".

"However, we still believe that this is an extremely challenging deadline, and full co-operation between Government and industry will be required to achieve it".

"Valpak also welcomes the confirmation given by the DTI on plans for the 'no frills' National Clearing House (NCH)".

"Although there remains much that needs to be clarified on this issue, we feel that this is, in principal, a positive move in response to concerns raised by Valpak's SME members".

"Valpak is committed to being involved in the development of the NCH, and we are looking forward to liaising with government and our membership on this issue".

"Finally, the DTI's decision not to impose mandatory visible fees, as outlined in their third WEEE consultation, is consistent with the views of our members, which we represented fully in our submissions to the DTI".

"Valpak believes this option allows a competitive system to handle future and historic WEEE, and demonstrates that a visible fee system is not the Government's preferred solution".

Valpak's WEEE service is now the UK's largest WEEE precompliance scheme, with over 80 members, including LEC, Tesco, Rangemaster, Brother, and Toshiba Information Systems.
