SAN access kit for data recording
environments

Vmetro has developed a storage area network (SAN) access kit for data recording environments.

Vmetro has developed a storage area network (SAN) access kit for data recording environments The kit enables the unprecedented scaling of data recording environments via the creation or expansion of a data recording SAN

The kit consists of either a PCI-X or PMC-based Fibre Channel card specifically designed for high-speed recording and reproduction, plus a suite of software that enables real-time access and easy management of the data-recording environment.

All the capabilities and features typically found in data recording environments, such as readback, playback and record, are provided, as well as advanced features such as real-time data storage, disk grouping, and intelligent disk management.

The kit is compatible with Vmetro's entire range of products and shares the same common interface as the company's other data recorders, allowing easy integration of associated applications from one architecture to another.

With performance up to 180Mbyte/s, powerful user libraries (application program interface), and easy to use browser control, the Vmetro SAN access kit is suitable for the construction of a data recording SAN or the expansion of an existing one.

For example, a user wishing to record an analogue signal could construct a data recording SAN using Vmetro's SAN access kit, A/D card, Windows-compatible computer and JBOD.

The system would be programmed to store incoming data from the A/D to the JBOD, where it could then be analysed or played back.

Similarly, a user might wish to expand an existing data recording SAN with additional components and capabilities.

Playback servers, archive servers and analysis servers can be easily added using the kit.

Real-time data storage is provided by Vmetro's real-time file system and data striping technology.

The real-time file system allows fast, predictable, disk access by eliminating the need for "housekeeping" activities found in other file systems.

Data striping provides the equivalent of RAID level 0, and allows the maximum aggregate performance to be obtained from disk arrays.

Disk grouping allows any set of disk drives existing in the data-recording environment to be grouped together as one drive.

This is especially useful for security and performance reasons, as particular types of data can be assigned to one group or the other, and multiple groups may be accessed simultaneously and in real-time.

Intelligent disk management allows Vmetro data recorders to be used with disks deployed in any order.

This is particularly useful when the acquisition and analysis platforms are located in separate data recording environments, because it allows disks to be quickly moved from the acquisition server to the analysis server without worrying about the order of the disks.

The new kit is intended for applications in the defence, industrial automation and medical imaging markets such as radar, sonar, signal intelligence, image capture and manipulation, as well as quality control. Request a free brochure from Vmetro ...
