Toolkit speeds data recording developments

A Vmetro product story

A new data recording toolkit aims to ease the development of custom data recording applications, while reducing time to market and development costs.

This toolkit, called "Open Programming Environment for Data Recording" is being rolled out across all Vmetro programmable data recorders and improves upon Vmetro's already extensive software development platform with a number of significant additions.

New user modules support improved hardware abstraction, by allowing customers to plug in even more hardware-specific code into the software framework.

Modules of particular interest include a new communications module that facilitates the use of sockets in command and response protocols as well as a new initialisation module, which provides a standard mechanism for initialising application-specific hardware.

The environment also includes: new ready-to-run examples for commonly used I/O controllers and digitisers; and new "how to" documentation discussing considerations and preferred mechanisms for integrating third-party drivers with Vmetro data recorders.

In addition, the Open Programming Environment for Data Recording is fully backwards compatible so that applications written for Vmetro's previous data recording environments will continue to function.

"Developing sustained data recording capability for today's high-speed sensors is often more difficult than first imagined", said Eric Gulliksen, Embedded Hardware Practice Director for VDC.

"I applaud Vmetro for addressing these difficulties so directly".

"Vmetro's goal is to provide the most powerful, flexible and easy to use programming environment available for data recording applications", said Tom Bohman, Vmetro's Vice President of Business Development.

"To achieve this we have developed a simple but powerful API and bundled it with a range of programming tools including extensive project files, sample code, and documentation".

Vmetro will be deploying Open Programming Environment for Data Recording across its programmable MDR and Marlin lines of data recorders over the next three months.

Announcements will follow as each upgraded product becomes available.
