Cambridge-based Virtual Business Network (VBN) has been chosen to deliver superior web-based services to Tin Technology, the world's foremost authority on tin VBN will build an online network to help the electronics industry cope with the planned EU Directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical Equipment

The directive demands that lead is no longer used in affected products from 2006 due to health and safety reports that it poses a potential threat to human health and the environment if improperly discarded.

Dr Jeremy Pearce, Technology Information and Forecasting Manager, Tin Technology, said: "VBN ran an excellent workshop on virtual networking as a concept for managing European research projects and we were impressed by their proven capabilities in this area".

"We felt it sensible to outsource this project to reduce 'whole life' costs and increase integrated functionality".

"Speed of delivery was also a critical factor for us, hence the decision to go with VBN".

The online network, named Elfnet, acts as a lifeline to the electronics industry, providing support to companies, identifying high priority areas for industry collaboration, evaluating substitutes, and providing a link between regional networks including a European basis for a global initiative.

John Jeffrey, CEO, VBN said: "This is a fascinating project which aims to help the European electronics industry overcome the financial and technological consequences of the lead-free transitional period".

"We are providing a tool for collaboration which will allow dissemination to wide audiences using one, easy-to-use integrated system".

"With the ELFNET network in place, 2006 may eventually prove less threatening for both industrial and electronic manufacturers".
